2015. Year 10.  Binary.

Year 10 was “Binary”, specifically Binary Opposition. Each team was given a pair of opposites and were required to make them their central conflict. Think Good vs Evil etc.

PRODUCER’S NOTES:  Year 10 was the most difficult year to settle on a theme. This was the first and only year we started the clues without finalizing the theme.  We knew it would be one of three things (Elements and Binary being two of those, the third we may still do at some point). Our clues had to fit one of those three. The decision was made (BINARY) as a play on the 1 and 0 in 10.  The Introducing Year 10 poster was designed by Samuel Tressler IV, after about 4-5 concept start/stops. The launch concept was a group effort with a lot of things serendipitously clicking. The blood on the computer keys on the poster which was an element we threw out there for mystery, ended up inspiring us to create the elimination tool for the keyboard at launch. Teams would have to dip their hands in blood and eliminate keys by bloodying them up.

Joey McAdams once again did the opening, this time a glorious use of ferro fluid.

Year 10 also marked the year we went all in on producing a short film with our hosts. Building on the teaser for Drug Church at the end of Year 9’s “The Producer”, we outlined a fairly large story, with Drug Church: The Prequel being the beginning story to it.  A few happy accidents and Mikael Johnson (who was originally only going to serve as Producer and not star in) was cast in the role of Police Chief. Jeff Keilholtz and Matthew Manning were the enthusiastic cop and his partner on the lookout for criminal mastermind Clownface (Clark Kline). Production for 72 shorts is normally more limited than even the 72 filmmakers have, with half a day of shooting max, but Drug Church had the luxury a few half days of shooting. Shooting went right down to the wire with Clark and Sam out filming the final scene in between hosting duties of Friday Night Premieres. At the same time everyone else’s movies were playing at Weinberg, they drove around got final shots, and ran back in to finish the show. Nothing like last minute. It’s all part of what makes 72 weekend so fun. One day we’ll return to the world of Drug Church.

Our second 72 Script Fest had the main prize as the winning script being adapted into a short film.  After the writer, Jenni Prange Boran chose a team who dropped out, she then chose Samuel Tressler IV who adapted it into a silent film with voiceover.  The short premiered Saturday Evening.

Doug Powell wasn’t able to host this year, so we did the next best thing and brought him in to shoot segments to be placed on a Max Headroom background, to really sell home the 80’s feeling of the night.
