Test your equipment/workflow!
6) Test your equipment and workflow. This is the time to figure out what needs you may have and fill in the gaps now. Test your equipment: camera/lighting/ sound and editing computer. AND test your workflow from ingesting footage/editing/rendering and especially do a run through with exporting and uploading. These things can take a long time depending on speed of computer and internet.

7) Make your 10 Second Team Video if possible. Teams are encouraged to use 10 seconds to introduce their team in a fun way. Do NOT just do your logo. These will be turned in with your film as a separate file in 2024!

Brainstorm
You have your criteria, now’s time to BRAINSTORM. Some teams like to keep this just to the writers, other teams like a big “writers room” where lots of heads can crack the criteria…but regardless it’s a good practice to keep the other folks in the loop.
As you are brainstorming you will probably be figuring out:
Characters
Locations
Costumes
Set Design Needs
Make Up Needs
This is the time to get those folks working on the various aspects of production. Don’t wait until you have a final script to jump on these things.
Write!
It’s time to write! Some teams will write a full script. Others will write a treatment with shots. Remember that deciding to rewrite or cut a scene now saves HOURS later- so try to get the idea down so you aren’t shooting for 6 hours on a scene you want to cut later because you don’t like your dialogue or it “didn’t work”.
Shot List but Storyboard if you can. And get coverage!
It’s a great idea to have someone storyboard but at the BARE MINIMUM have a shot list. This will go a long way and also prevent you from just placing a camera down and then having actors act in front of it. It’s tempting when you have so little time, but if the script/idea calls for it – try to be dynamic with your camera, with your action/blocking. And make sure to get COVERAGE – don’t just do a master shot. It’s good to have options to cut to…and even if you have a perfect shot list, things can go wrong so it’s nice to have options if you have time for them.
Shoot!
It’s finally here, the shoot day!
Everyone runs sets differently, so like most of the advice on this page- work how you work best. Most folks shoot between 1 1/2 to 2 days on the 72 Film Fest with Sunday almost exclusively editing and exporting. The size of your team, the amount/complexity of pages of script and your ambition will determine this schedule, but don’t forget some important stuff:
Don’t forget:
- Coverage. Most 72 Film Fest team directors either edit or work closely with their editors but not having the proper coverage can make an edit take way longer. Yes you may have it storyboarded and you have a lot of dynamic shots planned and locked in in your head, but stuff happens. So maybe do a master on a complicated scene, or if you don’t have time- hit record on a rehearsal or blocking take and frame everything in. Something you can fall back on if needed.
- Audio! Get proper levels ON SET so you don’t have to struggle later in the edit. This is the number one thing teams mess up. Remember to never let audio PEAK (never above 0db) but also make sure it isn’t too low or only a little higher than say a fan, or cicadas. Get the mic close. You don’t need amazing equipment to get decent audio. You just need to be close with your mics (and making sure the mic/actors aren’t right in front of something loud) and monitor the sound.
- Food. These folks have given up sleep to come out and help you make your vision. Feed them. Keep them hydrated. Make sure you pay attention to people’s dietary needs when you place your orders. If someone isn’t making food for your set, it’s a good idea to have the menu out at the beginning of the day and just have everyone write their orders to make the breaks most efficient.
- If it’s just a few people (as it often is with 72’s own productions) take a lot of stuff to set you THINK you might need (everything from snacks to lights to batteries and chargers, tape, cables and wires, even that extra lens you rarely use etc), that way if you need something it’s only a tub away. If you have an extra person – put them in charge of doing Assistant Director stuff. Get that off the plate of the Director so they can focus on the movie. The last thing you want to do is have to hold for a trip somewhere to get a battery or wait to charge something.
- First Aid Kit. Have one on set every day.
Assemble the Cut! (if you can)
So Assembly cuts may or may not be feasible with the time allowed (unless you have a dedicated editor). If the director will be editing, most likely they’ll need to crash after ingesting footage after the first long shoot day.
But IF you have an extra person tho – it is a good idea to assemble your footage in a timeline. Understand what you have shot, know about how long your scenes are running, and also get a rough idea of what’s working and what isn’t. You can still make changes on the second shoot day to accommodate anything you learn. Are you going too long? Do you even need scene 3 because someone ad-libbed in Scene 2 and got out the only info you needed in scene 3. Was the closeup in Scene 4 completely out of focus and needs reshot? Are your audio levels low and need to be fixed. All sorts of decisions can be made and problems solved if you check what you have BEFORE you go back out to shoot that second day.
Many teams will just shoot until they’re done then ingest on Saturday Night or Sunday Morning and then start editing and realize they messed up something big. This is the worst case scenario (and has happened to quite a few teams). An assembly prevents this.
Finish the Shoot
Most folks won’t have time to do an assembly cut (or it just isn’t part of your workflow) so this final day will just be scrambling to finish shooting any pages that haven’t been touched.
But if you have time, this is also a great way to flesh out that cut. Maybe add an insert, maybe get a different line delivery for something that didn’t work before, or even reshoot a scene if necessary.
Rough Cut and Tighten the Edit.
Now that you have finished shooting, it’s time to really get that edit going. Or Start the edit if you weren’t able to do an assembly.
Smooth out any edits that were rough in the assembly with different takes or pick up shots (or throwaway “cat in the windows” if it’s really rough). It’s best to go scene to scene as much as possible without spending TOO much time dialing in one particular scene. Get a good rough cut first so you can stand back watch (and potentially share it)…and also understand what you have to do to get it under maximum length. And once you have that initial rough cut- there may still be time to get a shot if necessary.
If you’re under the maximum, watch it a couple times then move on to audio.
Audio Edit!
Remember Audio!
Never go above 0db! It’s best to peak at around -2db-6db.
This is a good gauge taken from a variety of sources (although it can very much be dialed in better according to your specific film/needs/style). Music may need to be much lower if dialogue is over it or if the music is big sounding (some folks recommend music to be about 20db lower than dialogue). This is by no means a requirement…but if you’re at a loss here’s some basics:
- Peak: -2db through -6db. Never go above 0db!
- Overall Mix Level: -10db to -14db
- Dialogue: -12db to -15db
- Music: -18db to -22db
- Sound Effects: -10db to -20db with occasional spikes up to -8db.
Color Correct/Tighen the Edit
Once your audio levels are good, then you can move on to color correction, matching color on shots/takes etc, and finding that overall look for your film. Some folks may throw a LUT on everything while editing the rough, but here is where you can dial that in.
Do NOT do this before you do a decent audio edit making sure your levels are good. We have seen too many teams jump right to this and not have any time to fix their audio levels (too low, or all over the place). Remember it doesn’t matter how pretty it is if people can’t hear it – folks tend to zone out if they have to struggle to hear something.
Grab ScreenShots
Grab a screenshot or two that will be used in the online catalog for your film.
Prepare your export.
Put 1 frame of black before and after your film.
Put 10 Second Team Video directly after the 1 frame of black and begin your film directly after that.
Export the Film.
Accepted Format for screening is H.264 or H.265 (1080p Files preferred). 25Mbs max. Sound: Stereo AAC.
Turn in/Upload the Film.
Put your film, your still image(s), Official Entry Form and any releases into a folder. Make sure Your film is titled “Team Name-Title”
In Person: The Ordinary Hen 6:30pm-9pm Sep 29th.
Online: teams.72fest.com Team Portal! Upload your film, team video, screen still, and fill out official entry form and cast/crew.
BackUP: We accept GOOGLE DRIVE, DROPBOX and other cloud storage links. Put your film, your still image(s), Official Entry Form and any releases into a folder. Then on Google, click GET SHAREABLE LINK on the folder. Or on DROPBOX select COPY DROPBOX LINK on the folder itself. Message the link to us on Discord (or email staff@72fest.com). We must be able to download the link in its entirety by 9pmEST. We will update the Discord as we receive and verify. Failure to provide us a fully downloadable link by 9pmEST will constitute a late entry.

Make a 30 Second Trailer of your short and upload it same way as uploading film. They will premiere at 72@KNIGHT which is a collaboration between us and Movie Knight at Frederick Arts Center. Come out, show off your trailer and chat about your experience making a movie. Afterward we’ll also post it on our Instagram and 72Fest.com Website! Can be anything you want for a trailer – just max 30 seconds.

WHAT IS 72 FILM FEST?
A Time Based Competition where filmmaking teams have only 72 hours to write/direct/edit and score a short film based on specific criteria given out to each team. Perfect amount of time to grab a bunch of friends or colleagues and make a movie.
WHAT, WHERE, WHEN? (2024)
72 Film Fest is a film competition in Sept/Oct where teams have 72 hours to make a film: write, shoot, edit and turn in a finished film within 72 Hours. Each team gets individualized criteria specific to their team and are expected to make all creative choices within those 72 hours.
72 Film Fest is in Frederick, MD and screenings take place that the historic Weinberg Center.

SO WHAT IS THIS CONTEST EXACTLY?
On a Thursday night in September Filmmakers from around the region will collect at the LAUNCH PARTY (In Person and maybe Online) and await the hosts to take the stage and begin giving out criteria. Teams will then have 72 hours to write/shoot/edit a short film based around their specific team Criteria. Teams are instructed to share behind the scenes photos on Instagram, so everyone can follow along throughout the weekend. Once the films are turned in Sunday Night they are judged by some fellow artists and industry professionals. Then they will screen 2 weekends later at the historic Weinberg Center in Frederick Maryland.
FILMMAKER GENERAL FAQ:
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?
Anyone in US can participate. Team Leader must be resident of the United States and agree to full terms and conditions. Any team leader under 18 must have parent or guardian sign documents and take responsibility for the team and production.
DO I HAVE TO BE FROM MARYLAND TO PARTICIPATE?
No. Anyone from around the US can participate.
I’M UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE, SO CAN I STILL COMPETE?
Of course you can. All we ask is that you bring a legal guardian with you on the night of the Launch Party to sign the waiver forms on your behalf. Make sure your parents know that movies can range the gamut from G to R. The parent or guardian must be willing to take responsibility for your team in the same way a Team Leader would including Covid Guidelines/Requirements!
IS THERE A MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF PEOPLE I CAN HAVE ON A TEAM?
No.
We have some teams that are single filmmakers/animators on up to teams that have more members than we have friends.
CAN I JUST WAIT UNTIL THE LAUNCH PARTY TO REGISTER?
Registration will be closing down BEFORE Launch this year.
CAN I USE STOCK FOOTAGE OR STOCK VISUAL EFFECTS ETC
Providing you are utilizing the stock elements ON TOP of footage shot completely during the 72 Hour period, it is allowed. Making a film out of stock footage in part or full is not allowed. So if you are layering an explosion over footage you shot in the 72 Hours, it’s ok. If you are utilizing stock footage of an explosion as a completed shot in your film, it is not ok. You must also have the rights to any stock element you use in your film.
CAN I TURN IN ANIMATED FILM?
Yes, providing you animated completely during the 72 Hours. You may utilize elements you have prior to the weekend (ie 3D assets etc) but all creative decisions and animation must be done within those 72 hours. You must have rights to use any elements.
WHERE DO I TURN IN THE MOVIES?
Will Update as we get closer to the Fest.
WHAT IF I'M LATE? DO YOU ACCEPT SCREENING COPIES?
We will accept late entries/screening copies. See rules for instructions. NOTE: Any film that is late, or has a screening copy turned in is ineligible for Juried awards and will be marked on the ballot.
WHO ARE YOUR JUDGES? HOW DOES IT WORK?
The full jury will be posted as we get closer to the Fest. We have judges that have worked in various parts of the industry both in front and behind camera. They judge various aspects of each film including the ones we recognize with awards (writing, cinematography, editing, acting etc…), overall quality of the film both storytelling and technical as well as determining original use of criteria and theme. Additional categories may be judged depending on theme such as “Best Use of Theme”, “Avant Garde”, and more. We reserve the right to add/subtract awards according to submissions.
WHAT AWARDS/PRIZES ARE YOU GIVING OUT THIS YEAR?

THE PAST: We give out awards in many categories including: Acting, Writing, Cinematography, Editing, Student, Amateur, Pro, Best of the Fest and Best Audience. Other theme specific awards are given out each year as well. In the past we’ve given out Costume/Makeup, Music/Sound, Avant Garde, Best of the Rest, Most Improved Team and more.

HOW ARE YOU ANY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CONTESTS LIKE THIS?
Everything showing under one roof at the same time is one. It makes a gloriously long Friday Night. But also our criteria is specific to the team. Normally no two filmmakers have the same criteria. Will that be the same in 2024? Nobody knows until Launch! Past years we’ve given “Opposites”, Beginning and Ending Frames, two Hollywood movies to mash-up, a Science term to draw inspiration, a “fairy tale”, a polaroids, first lines of novels, international proverbs and more.

WHAT IS THE REGISTRATION FEE FOR?
The registration fee goes towards our budget of renting venues, online fees, purchasing awards and printing/advertising, plus any other criteria related surprises.

HOW LONG CAN MY MOVIE BE? DO CREDITS COUNT TOWARDS LENGTH?
Credits do count to your total length. Your maximum time will be assigned at the Launch Party or posted online with your criteria. Please include 1 frame of black before/after your credits/film.
WHAT IS THE 10 SECOND TEAM VIDEO?
We ask teams to make a 10 Second Team Video where teams can announce who they are before the Fest. There are no rules except do not just put a 10 second logo and DO NOT USE COPYRIGHT MUSIC. For examples please go to WATCH PAST ENTRIES, and view some of the more recent years.
WHAT ARE THE DELIVERABLES?
DELIVERABLES:
- ADD 1 Frame of Black before and after your film.
- ADD 10 SECOND TEAM VIDEO, THEN YOUR FILM. Team videos are a great way to show off your team. Do not just do a 10 second logo. Put one frame of black at the beginning of your timeline, Drop the 10 second team video in, then start your film. It must be no more than 10 seconds (shorter is fine)! These 10 seconds do not count towards your maximum time.
- FILMS MUST BE IN AN ACCEPTABLE FORMAT. Accepted Format for screening is H.264 or H.265 (1080p Files preferred). Bitrate of 30Mbs max.Sound: Stereo AAC.
- PROVIDE AT LEAST ONE STILL IMAGE.

- ALL RELEASES MUST BE TURNED IN by Monday Sep 30th 9pmEST..All location, talent, and music releases must be turned in with your film. Failure to provide releases may result in your film not being judged and/or screened.
WHAT IS THE RULE ON COPYRIGHT MUSIC?
You need to have rights to your image and music. We understand not all of you are able to create music for your films, but you can team up with a local musician. There is also enough in the public domain to score your film, or you can use some Creative Commons licenses, or negotiate/purchase rights from content owners. Submit the proper releases with your film or if purchased/Creative Commons – print out the license. Using copyrighted music may prevent you from being screened or judged including in future screenings. NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE RIGHTS TO YOUR MUSIC AS ONLINE STREAMING SITES MAY FLAG/MUTE YOUR AUDIO. Even properly attained rights will sometimes flag the online systems so we recommend you test it on YouTube with an unlisted/private link before submitting your film.
CAN I USE SPECIAL EFFECTS or STOCK FOOTAGE?
Sure. We ask that all creative elements (other than music) are created within the 72 hour period. It’s possible to use various filters and editing tricks to get some canned VFX into your movie but no filming should be done outside of the weekend. Stock Footage, like public domain music, is acceptable if all rights are attained and creative decisions are made within the 72 hours of the contest and the footage is used to accent your film and isn’t the main creative push.
DO I NEED A LOCATION RELEASE FOR EVERYTHING INCLUDING PUBLIC PROPERTY?
You need a location release for every private property you shoot on. We do not need releases for public property but you may need a permit to shoot there. You are not required to turn in proof of a permit.
DO I REALLY HAVE TO SHOOT EVERYTHING WITHIN 72 HOURS?
Yes. Don’t sell yourself short, or try to game the system by cheating. Your reputation will be forever tarnished and “you’ll never work in this town again”, said some producer somewhere, but that’s pretty much how it works here too. Teams like to police each other, and if they catch you doing something, you’ll be the wrong kinda talk around the Fest.
DO I KEEP ALL THE RIGHTS TO MY FILM?
Of Course. The film remains your own and after the 72 Film Fest screenings you can do whatever you want with it. We reserve the right to screen the version turned in at 72 Film Fest events, for promotional purposes and use it in our DVD and online compilations. Our agreement will be posted before the Fest so you and your lawyer (or cousin that claims to be one because he’s seen almost every episode of Night Court) can go over it.
WHO ARE YOU FOLKS?
72 Fest is made up of filmmakers and writers, some have even participated in previous 72 Film Fests and came on board after they retired their team. Formed in 2006, 72 Fest has the mission “To provide an outlet for the creative community by hosting challenges in the fields of filmmaking, stage, writing, and other arts.”
